Rent a car in Puglia: everything you need to know
Organizing a road trip in Puglia inevitably raises the question of car rental. Do you really need to rent a car ? Where should you book it ? How can you avoid unpleasant surprises ? This is a question we are asked very often and for good reason. A car is often essential to discover the region in its entirety. In this article, we share our advice based on our experience as hosts at Trulli di Bacco, so that your trip can be smooth, relaxed, and stress-free.

Do you need to rent a car to visit Puglia?
In most cases, the answer is yes. Puglia is a large region with many picturesque villages, beautiful beaches, and accommodations often located in the countryside. Without a car, you risk missing out on many places and losing time using public transport. A car allows you to easily visit villages across the region and reach more hidden beaches. Renting a car also gives you access to places you simply couldn’t reach otherwise. At Trulli di Bacco, we clearly see that our guests enjoy their stay much more when they have the freedom to move around at their own pace.
Rent a car in Puglia: our tips
Where to rent a car in Puglia?
To rent a car in Puglia, you have several options. You can book directly through local agencies or use an online car rental comparison platform. These platforms allow you to see many offers, compare prices, and check included services. Thanks to car rental comparison platforms, you can choose the solution that best fits your budget and your needs. Among the most well-known platforms are Skyscanner, Booking, and Rentalcars. For our part, we generally recommend doyouitaly.com, which we have been using for several years. This comparison website offers many options, covers most rental agencies in the region, and allows you to select the most practical offer based on your criteria (pick-up location, vehicle type, included insurance, etc.).

Insurance: what you need to know
When booking a car, insurance is a crucial point not to overlook. You have several options.
1. Insurance via a comparison platform
Taking insurance online via the comparison website is a reliable option and is often cheaper than the insurance offered directly by the agency. However, if damage occurs, you will need to advance the costs yourself and then request reimbursement from the comparison website. It is important to know that rental agencies do not always appreciate this process. They will often try to convince you to take their insurance using… particular sales techniques. Also note that the rental agency will request a higher security deposit on your credit card if you choose this option. This deposit is a temporarily blocked amount, released once the vehicle is returned in good condition.
2. Insurance at the rental agency
By choosing to take insurance directly at the rental agency, you pay on site, and the security deposit is usually lower. Rental agencies often strongly push their additional insurance. They do not do this to protect you, but because it represents a significant source of income for them. The price of their insurance is always higher and can sometimes even cost more than the car rental itself.
3. Credit card–linked insurance
You can choose not to take additional insurance and rely on your credit card coverage. Some credit cards already include insurance that covers car rentals abroad. This depends on the type of card and the specific terms set by your bank. In such cases, it is sometimes possible to decline the insurance offered by the rental agency, provided you carefully check in advance what is covered (deductible, types of damage, duration, countries included, etc.).
Our advice is to check with your bank before you travel and compare the different options. Combining the insurance from the comparison platform, the rental agency, and your credit card can result in unnecessary duplication and avoidable extra costs.
Credit card: essential for car rental
The reservation must always be made with a credit card in the name of the main driver. Debit cards are generally not accepted. This is crucial to know, as some debit cards include “credit” functions that can confuse travelers. Many travelers have experienced issues because they used this type of card, leading to extra fees or refusal by the rental company when picking up the vehicle. It is therefore essential to use a standard credit card (Mastercard, Visa, or equivalent). You must also ensure that your card limit is high enough to cover the security deposit. Booking with someone else’s card or without checking the limit can lead to additional fees or unnecessary complications.

Vehicle inspection: a crucial step
When picking up the car, take the time to check all existing damage, even very small ones. You must report them to the rental company, even if they say that only damages larger than a €2 coin really matter. If you cannot inspect the vehicle with an employee, film and photograph the car, both inside and outside. This precaution and these proofs will protect you in case of disagreement about the vehicle’s condition when returning it.
This step will allow you to enjoy your stay with complete peace of mind.
Driving license
Make sure your driving license is valid and that you have it with you. An expired license or one not accepted by the agency can result in extra fees or prevent you from picking up the vehicle.
Late arrivals: something to plan ahead
If your flight arrives late in the evening, after 10 PM for example, some rental agencies may be closed or charge extra fees for vehicle pick-up. These fees can be high, sometimes several hundred euros, depending on the agency and arrival time. To avoid unpleasant surprises, it can be practical to spend a night near the airport and pick up the car the next morning, or to check in advance the agency’s opening hours and specific late-arrival fees.

Can you visit Puglia without a car?
Visiting Puglia without a car is possible, but it can be restrictive and sometimes stressful. Trains and buses do exist, but some villages are difficult to reach. Stops are not always clearly marked, and certain lines run only a few times a day. In fact, schedules are not very convenient for exploring the region in depth, especially if you want to enjoy it at a true “dolce vita” pace. This often requires careful planning and a lot of patience.
During her first trip, Maurine tested public transport from Alberobello. She quickly realized that some journeys involved long waits and severely limited freedom of movement, particularly when trying to explore nearby villages or adapt her itinerary on the fly.
On the other hand, having a car allows you to save time and move around at your own pace. It also gives you access to places that public transport does not reach: small villages, hidden spots, and secluded beaches. To fully enjoy your stay and discover the region as we know it at Trulli di Bacco, having a car clearly remains the best choice.
Driving in Puglia: what to expect ?
Driving in Puglia can surprise travelers who are not used to it. Traffic rules are the same as in all Europe, but they are often interpreted more flexibly. Turn signals are rarely used, overtaking can be bold, horns are frequent, and flashing headlights are often used to communicate on the road.
No panic, this is Italian-style driving! Once you understand the local rhythm, you quickly get used to it. It’s part of the road trip charm. The best approach is to stay relaxed and anticipate a bit more than you would at home.
Parking and ZTL Zones
Parking in cities and villages follows a simple color code:
-
White: free
-
Blue: paid
-
Yellow: reserved for residents or people with reduced mobility
ZTL zones, or limited traffic zones, are present in almost all historic city centers and are monitored by cameras. Entering a ZTL without authorization results in a fine ranging from €80 to €300, sometimes sent several months after the violation. These zones are indicated by a white sign with a red circle and the wording “Zona a Traffico Limitato”, sometimes with time restrictions. It is recommended to park outside historic centers and use local transport or walk to visit villages.
When the sign is green or shows “non attiva”, it means the zone is not active and you can drive there freely. Conversely, when the sign is red or indicates “attiva”, the zone is active, and only authorized vehicles (residents, delivery vehicles, etc.) are allowed to enter.
