Do you need to rent a car to visit Puglia?
In most cases, the answer is yes. Puglia is a large region with many picturesque villages, beautiful beaches, and accommodations often located in the countryside. Without a car, you risk missing out on many places and losing time using public transport. A car allows you to easily visit villages across the region and reach more hidden beaches. Renting a car also gives you access to places you simply couldn’t reach otherwise. This comparison website offers many options, covers most rental agencies in the region, and allows you to select the most practical offer based on your criteria (pick-up location, vehicle type, included insurance, etc.).
Insurance: what you need to know
When booking a car, insurance is a crucial point not to overlook. You have several options.
1. Insurance via a comparison platform
Taking insurance online via the comparison website is a reliable option and is often cheaper than the insurance offered directly by the agency. However, if damage occurs, you will need to advance the costs yourself and then request reimbursement from the comparison website. It is important to know that rental agencies do not always appreciate this process. They will often try to convince you to take their insurance using… particular sales techniques. Also note that the rental agency will request a higher security deposit on your credit card if you choose this option. This deposit is a temporarily blocked amount, released once the vehicle is returned in good condition.
2. Insurance at the rental agency
By choosing to take insurance directly at the rental agency, you pay on site, and the security deposit is usually lower. Rental agencies often strongly push their additional insurance. They do not do this to protect you, but because it represents a significant source of income for them. Visiting Puglia without a car is possible, but it can be restrictive and sometimes stressful. Trains and buses do exist, but some villages are difficult to reach. Stops are not always clearly marked, and certain lines run only a few times a day. In fact, schedules are not very convenient for exploring the region in depth, especially if you want to enjoy it at a true “dolce vita” pace. This often requires careful planning and a lot of patience.

No panic, this is Italian-style driving! Once you understand the local rhythm, you quickly get used to it. It’s part of the road trip charm. The best approach is to stay relaxed and anticipate a bit more than you would at home.
Parking and ZTL Zones
Parking in cities and villages follows a simple color code:

ZTL zones, or limited traffic zones, are present in almost all historic city centers and are monitored by cameras. Entering a ZTL without authorization results in a fine ranging from €80 to €300, sometimes sent several months after the violation. These zones are indicated by a white sign with a red circle and the wording “Zona a Traffico Limitato”, sometimes with time restrictions. It is recommended to park outside historic centers and use local transport or walk to visit villages.
When the sign is green or shows “non attiva”, it means the zone is not active and you can drive there freely. Conversely, when the sign is red or indicates “attiva”, the zone is active, and only authorized vehicles (residents, delivery vehicles, etc.) are allowed to enter.
